Kern-Tulare History Collaborative (Grades 5-12 and History-Social Science Teachers)

  • Dates: 02 – 02 Mar, 2021
  • Location: Via Zoom

A Library of Congress, California History-Social Science Project, Kern and Tulare County Offices of Education Partnership

With funding from the Library of Congress Western Region office, and in partnership with the California History-Social Science Project, the Tulare County Office of Education and the Kern County Superintendent of Schools are proud to announce a new professional learning program specifically designed to support the implementation of California's History-Social Science framework.

Our collaborative will launch on July 31 with an overview of the Library of Congress digital resources and Teaching with Primary Sources (TPS) Teacher Network. TPS is a social media platform that will connect and engage teachers as they work to build lessons utilizing credible primary sources largely from the Library of Congress. Learn more about TPS Teacher Network here.

Participants in this virtual community of practice will be guided on integrating Library of Congress resources and essential questions from the framework into an inquiry-based unit, as well as experience a sample inquiry of US History.

In order to support student capacity to analyze primary and secondary sources, the professional learning goals for teachers are:

  1. Build a common understanding of the inquiry-model of learning and the instructional shifts outlined in the 2016 CA History-Social Science Framework.
  2. Guide participants through inquiry-lessons created using primary and secondary sources and instructional strategies from the Library of Congress.
  3. Create and implement inquiry-based lessons utilizing primary and secondary sources along with instructional strategies from the Library of Congress.

Library of Congress grant funds support participation for 100 teachers.

Registration includes:

  • Inquiry Design Model: Building Inquiries in Social Studies by Swan, Lee, and Grant will be provided at no cost to participants after attending the first virtual session.
  • Participants will receive a $100 gift card for completion of the program.
