Fall in Love with Writing (Grades 4-12)

  • Dates: 21 – 21 Feb, 2023
  • Location: Visalia
  • Address: 7000 W Doe Avenue, Suite A Willow Room

Readers read beautiful, inspiring, and often complex passages that make them linger in thought. Writers take and use bits and pieces of what they read, and use it as mentor texts for their own writing. Our job in helping students fall in love with writing and revising is to find the right mentor texts that allow them to have fun playing with language as they develop their own craft.

In this workshop, we will share a variety of mentor texts and help you experience the power within your pen. Straight-forward, explicit activities will remove the wonder and show you how everyone can become a stronger writer through the power of mentor texts. You will leave with repeatable activities to use with your students that will help them write more engaging introductions to informative essays, more emotion-grabbing details in their argumentative writing, and deeper connections in their narratives. All text types will be explored as we introduce mentor texts from a variety of genres. You will then seek out gems as you treasure hunt for mentor texts to share with others. Experience a heartfelt sense of belonging as if you've spent the day at a writer's retreat. Leave with an arm full of activities to replicate in your classroom tomorrow.

Participants will receive a copy of The Writing Thief: Using Mentor Texts to Teach the Craft of Writing by Ruth Culham.
