Building Powerful Book Clubs (Grades 4-12)

  • Dates: 15 – 15 Nov, 2022
  • Location: Visalia
  • Address: 7000 W Doe Avenue, Suite A Willow Room

Are you seeking evidence-based strategies to support your English learners as part of Integrated ELD? Are you looking for genuine ways to build SEL into instruction? Do you want to go deeper into how to use effective questioning to guide students' comprehension and academic conversation? Did you try book clubs years ago and want to see what's new? Then, this workshop is for you!

Book clubs transform readers. Students explore social and emotional learning (SEL) themes within the reading - inspiring the book club to read deeply, think critically, talk openly, and write reflectively about topics that matter, thus embedding SEL in authentic ways. When students have the opportunity to come together in book clubs to discuss what they read, comprehension deepens. Conversations around themes, characters, conflicts, and issues push readers to empathize with others and challenge each other's thinking through effective questioning. A strong sense of belonging and connection is formed. Through intensive training with Learning & the Brain Institute's Science of Learning and Columbia University's Teachers College, we have bountiful resources to share that you will want to take back and implement immediately.
