Integrated and Designated ELD Strand for Secondary Teachers (Session 3 of 4)

This two-year professional learning strand is designed for middle and high school teachers, instructional coaches and administrators, and teacher educators. The main focus areas of the institute are Integrated and Designated English language development (ELD) and asset-based pedagogy, especially culturally and linguistically sustaining practices, as they are the foundational components of effective and responsive secondary schools for meeting the needs of multilingual learning (ML) and English learner (EL) students.

Participants will build deep understandings of how to cultivate asset-based classrooms and provide responsive, intellectually rich instruction that attends to ML and EL students' academic, linguistic, and social-emotional development. High-leverage instructional practices featured in this professional learning strane intentionally support content and language development, promote active engagement, and integrate the domains of language (oracy, listening, reading, and writing).

Participants will become acquainted with the guidance provided in key California Department of Education resources, including the English Learner Roadmap, CA ELD Standards, CA ELA-ELD Framework, and the newly published Improving Education for Multilingual and English Learner Students: Research to Practice.

Audience: Secondary teachers and teacher leaders, all content areas.
